The company outlines plans to recycle electric vehicle batteries in the coming years.
It is estimated that by 2025, Volkswagen will produce 1 million electric vehicles per year. Since the life expectancy of a car battery pack is 10-15 years, with the popularity of electric vehicles, the supply of battery materials is limited, and it may be tight. Therefore, the public hopes to reduce the cost by recycling waste batteries.
The company said: “With the popularity of electric vehicles, recycling metals from waste batteries is much cheaper than mining them from the earth.” Some discarded electric vehicle batteries can also be reused for other purposes, such as remote charging or household energy storage. Volkswagen’s mobile fast charging station can store 360 kWh of energy, and can charge up to 4 cars in a single time, with a maximum output of 100 kW.
The Volkswagen Group Salzgitter parts factory is expected to become a battery recycling business center. Next year, the plant will have an annual recycling capacity of 1,200 tons, covering approximately 3,000 electric vehicles. The Volkswagen Group said: “In the long run, Volkswagen hopes to recycle about 97% of the raw materials in the waste battery pack. Now, this ratio is only about 53%. The Salzgitter plant is expected to allow the recycling rate of Volkswagen’s waste battery raw materials. Further increase to around 72%.”
