According to a Reuters report on April 29, a German official said on April 29 that France and Germany requested the European Commission to approve the provision of state subsidies to its multinational battery alliance. The alliance includes the automobile manufacturing trademark Citroen (PSA) Group and its German division Opel, as well as the French battery manufacturer Saft.
France and Germany have allocated a total of $1.9 billion to support the alliance of companies, thereby reducing the dependence of European automakers on Asian suppliers and protecting the employment impact of reducing the use of internal combustion engines.
A spokesperson for the German Ministry of Economic Affairs said that the economic ministries of France and Germany submitted a letter of intent to the EU’s executive body, hoping to obtain their provisional approval, but the letter of intent did not mention the specific amount that the two countries expect to receive state subsidies.
The spokesperson confirmed a previous report issued by the Frankfurter News and said: “We are now awaiting the approval of the European Commission.”
According to a report released by the Frankfurter News, the alliance between PSA and Saft has plans to use a factory from Opel to produce batteries. The factory is located in the German city of Kaiserslautern near the French border.
German Economy Minister Peter Altmeyer met with French Economy Minister Bruno Lemel on April 25th to discuss the issue and hope to make progress in promoting the battery manufacturer alliance.
More than 30 companies have applied for state subsidies from the German Ministry of Economic Affairs, including automakers Volkswagen and BMW, German battery manufacturer Valta and Swedish battery startup Northvolt.
