[Global Network Comprehensive Report] According to British media reports on April 23, the Porsche Boxster and Cayman will not only launch a pure electric version, but also launch a hybrid version in the future. The pure electric 718 Boxster and the 718 Cayman will be available before 2022. In addition, the two cars will also derive a mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid.
Porsche has previously said that it plans to electrify all its models, and the first to cater to this trend is the upcoming Taycan and Taycan Sport Turismo. Recently, Oliver Blume, chairman of Porsche Global Executive Board, revealed that the hybrid version is also under consideration. He said: “The 718 pure electric prototype has begun to be tested, and the hybrid version of the prototype is also being built.”
An engineering study inside Porsche shows that the current lithium-ion battery technology is not enough to make the pure electric version of the vehicle have a single cruising range of more than 300 kilometers without making significant changes to the existing mid-engine layout. Therefore, in addition to the pure electric version, the new 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman also plan to introduce hybrid and plug-in hybrid models.
At present, Porsche is implementing a plan, the pure electric version of the Boxster and Cayman’s redesigned models will use the company’s new pure electric platform PPE, which is expected to provide hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems.
In addition, the new generation of Porsche Macan has adopted a similar power layout, the new hybrid power continues to be built on the MLB platform, and also launched a pure electric version based on the PPE architecture.
