MG plans to electrify most SUV models for the Indian market in the coming year. At the same time, MG’s first medium-sized SUV Hector will use a 48V mild hybrid system. In addition, MG also plans to produce eZS electric vehicles in India.
The price of the MG eZS may range from Rs. 2.5 million to Rs. 3 million (approximately RMB 250,000-300,000) and a cruising range of up to 350 km. Chen Ruiqi, managing director of MG Automotive India, said that from January 2020, the model will be produced at the factory in Harold, Gujarat, India.
The MG believes that India will adopt more stringent BS-VI emission standards, so hybrid vehicles will be a powerful alternative to diesel vehicles. The electric motor in the hybrid electric power system can make up for some characteristics of the diesel engine, such as higher torque and higher fuel efficiency.
The MG will also add new car features to attract consumers, such as the addition of 5G network services and wireless software updates for each model. Chen Ruiqi said: “The consumer experience itself is a new brand.”
The MG expects that by the end of 2019, Hector’s first year sales will reach about 18,000. The MG also plans to use the existing 100,000 capacity plant in the next three years.
MG has selected 50 dealers in India and 120 customer service outlets will also operate, including retail stores, experience centers and gas stations. Chen Ruiqi said that the MG plans to reach 250 outlets by September of this year.
Chen Ruiqi insisted that the MG is not “eager” to increase production and expand India’s market share, but to look at the Indian market from a long-term perspective. He also said that the company’s focus is on laying the foundation, including building a benign network, establishing a good brand reputation, and ensuring high consumer satisfaction and dealer profitability.
