According to statistics from the French Automobile Manufacturers Association (CCFA), French diesel vehicle sales in 2018 fell by 7% year-on-year, accounting for 40% of the market, while in 2012 the share of diesel vehicles in the French market was 70%. CCFA believes that the decline in diesel vehicle sales is mainly due to the increase in fuel prices, the introduction of diesel vehicle traffic restrictions in major cities or in the future.
The French “Parisian” reported that the French diesel car market suffered another two strikes. The first point was the French “Yellow Vest Movement”, which was originally intended to protest against the increase in fuel prices such as diesel taxes. The second point is that since the summer of last year, the new car technology standards have been in force in France, so car manufacturers have to sell diesel cars at low prices.
While diesel vehicle sales fell, sales of electric and hybrid vehicles rose by 6%, while gasoline vehicles still dominate the sales market.

In the French market, sales of local automakers to Citroen Group (PSA) and Renault Auto increased by 8.3% in 2018, with PSA Group’s sales accounting for 30%, while Peugeot’s new car sales were approximately 699,000, an increase of 13.3%. Renault Group’s sales growth was less than 2.4%, and sales were mainly driven by its Dacia brand. Renault brand sales fell 3.5%, with December sales down 19% year-on-year. The Parisian newspaper believes that the arrest of Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn in Japan has had a certain impact on the decline in Renault brand sales.
