[Global Network] According to the US “Automotive News” reported on March 21, Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson (Hakan Samuelsson) said that due to the underestimation of the market demand for electric vehicles, it is expected to plug in before the end of this year Sales of hybrid vehicles will increase significantly.

Volvo’s plug-in hybrids, including the XC90 and XC60 SUVs, as well as the plug-in hybrid versions of the V90 and V60 wagons, account for 10-15% of Volvo’s global sales. Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson said at a roundtable discussion this week that “the sales of hybrid cars are expected to increase to 20-25% by the end of the year.”

However, due to underestimation of market demand, Volvo lacks other key components needed to produce plug-in hybrids, such as batteries and electric motors. Samuelson said that Volvo is currently producing a large number of all the components needed for plug-in hybrid cars and mild hybrid systems, and the output will be three times that of last year.

Volvo will launch a series of mild hybrids starting with the XC90 and XC60 diesel and petrol models this year. The car will be equipped with Volvo’s line-controlled kinetic energy recovery system.

According to the analysis company JATO Dynamicsd data, despite the supply bottleneck last year, the sales of Volvo hybrid cars in Europe increased from 16,000 in 2017 to 26,800. Volvo expects that by 2021, the global sales of plug-in hybrid cars will reach 25%.
