US IIHS will start vehicle automatic emergency braking system test

[Global Network Comprehensive Report] According to US media reports, more and more new cars are equipped with automatic emergency braking system. These systems can scan obstacles and pedestrians on the road ahead. If the driver does not respond in time, the system can Automatic braking to avoid or mitigate collisions. Such systems have been shown to reduce traffic accidents, but the merits of these systems have not been assessed. In response, the Highway Safety Insurance Association (IIHS) announced that it will add tests to the vehicle’s automatic braking system in its new vehicle safety assessment roster. The current IIHS new vehicle safety assessment includes a series of crash tests, as well as head restraint and headlight effectiveness ratings.

For the automatic braking system test, IIHS will perform three tests, each of which will be performed twice, and the speed of the test vehicles in the two tests will be 19.3 km/h and 40.2 km/h, respectively. In the first test, when the test vehicle approached, an adult-sized simulated pedestrian entered the lane from the right side to a central position between the right side of the road and the front of the vehicle. In the second test, a child-sized simulated pedestrian entered the lane between two parked cars on the roadside (so that the system’s response time was shorter) and eventually stopped right in front of the vehicle. In the third test, an adult-sized simulated pedestrian was directly at the center between the front of the running test vehicle and the right side of the driveway.

All of the above tests were performed on a dry road surface in daylight. According to the vehicle’s ability to avoid or mitigate collisions, IIHS rated the vehicle’s automatic braking system as “basic, good, and excellent”.

The first models to be tested will be small SUVs: 2018 BMW X1, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-5, and Chevrolet Equinox, Kia Lions, Mitsubishi Outlander, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4 And Volvo XC40.

Subaru Impreza has the best overall performance among the four cars that have been tested (Cadillac CT6, Subaru Impreza, Tesla Model S and Toyota Camry). IIHS is expected to announce the latest round of test results by the end of January.
