Volkswagen said that the new model Tarok, which will be on display in São Paulo on November 6, will soon be available in Brazil. It is the first to combine the urban SUV’s style elements with off-road design, as well as a Targa-style roof rack and front end. The pickup “is likely to expand the range of Volkswagen models in other international markets.” The Tarok will be powered by a 2.0-liter engine that will provide 150 horsepower, and the exact pre-sale price has not been disclosed.

Volkswagen is so ambitious because of its extensive cooperation negotiations with Ford in commercial vehicles, electric vehicles, and autonomous vehicles. The cooperation will reduce the development cost of Tarok, with a body length of 5000mm, slightly shorter than the Ford Ranger. Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diss recently revealed that the cooperation negotiations Ford may provide the technology used by the mid-size pickup truck Ranger, which is the economic pickup truck that Ford has created to reinvigorate the North American market.

For many years, Volkswagen has been working hard to break through the pickup category, surpassing rivals GM and Toyota. In addition to the Ford Ranger, other compact pickups include Chevrolet Colorado and General Canyon, Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier. Volkswagen’s German competitor Daimler has also entered the pickup field with X-class models in recent years.
